A 12-year-old Jewish boy Romek hides with a family of Catholic peasant farmers to escape the Nazis. In the village Gniecio introduces Romek as his distant relative from the city. Gniecio’s wife Manka fears for their safety – there is only one penalty for hiding a Jew – death. The eldest son of the family, twelve-year-old Vladek, guesses who Romek really is, and starts hating him…
