Born in Łódź, Poland in 1938. Director, playwright, screenwriter, actor, painter, poet, and dramatist. Graduated in ethnology, literature, and history from Warsaw University in 1959. Graduated from Łódź Film Academy in directing in 1962. Co-writer of Knife in the Water (Nóż w wodzie) by Roman Polanski and Innocent Sorcerers (Niewinni czarodzieje) by Andrzej Wajda. Author of many theatre plays. He published several poetry pamphlets. Laureate of many awards at Polish and international film festivals. In 1982 he received the German Film Award for Actor for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Die Fälschung and in 2003 he received the Polish Special Film Award.
